Just Pick Something

Woman Starting Exercise Routine

I’ve been trying to come up with a new slogan for the studio’s new brand Wichita Strength & Fitness (WSF). One of my friends suggested naming the studio Wichita Training Facility (WTF) as in W(hy)TF am I doing this? W(hat)TF was I thinking? W(hen)TF will this end? Considering how most people feel about exercise in general it might have been more appropriate & at the same time, inappropriate.

Most of the time when people find out what I do for a living their first reaction is guilt, “I should really lose weight”. Then there’s the confession stage seeking absolution for what they’ve been eating. Lastly there’s complete honesty “I hate working out”, and I get suckered in. Every. Time.

Nike has the slogan “Just Do It”. In order to not brazenly steal their catch phrase I was thinking WSF could be “Just Pick It” which is terrible! Here’s how the convo with my new friend inevitably will go: “I hate running” Ok, don’t run. Ride a bike. “I don’t have a bike.” Ok, how about going for walks? “No. I have allergies, I can’t go outside. Ever.” You could climb your stairs for 10 minutes 2x a day. “No, bad knees.” Tennis? “No” Soccer? “No” Basketball? “No” Pilates? “No” Swimming? “No” Zumba? “No” Boxing? “No” Ping Pong? “No”.

What’s the saying? Excuses are like….. If you don’t know the saying look it up, it’s spot on. I can’t really say that to my new friend though, seems to make them mad. Making people mad isn’t really a smart business model, so that particular saying can’t be my slogan. How great would that be though? Wichita Training Facility: Excuses are like….

Going to stick with Wichita Strength & Fitness and maybe the slogan could be “Just Try It”. Human bodies, ALL bodies are designed to move and there are a hundred different activities designed to move them. TRY SOME. I’m not saying that every body has to run, or every body has to be a body builder but doing some form of strength and cardiovascular training will improve your quality of life now in measurable ways as well as increase your longevity & quality of life in the future. And like Men’s Warehouse, I guarantee it. If you start trying different forms of exercise you will find something you don’t hate. Maybe you’ll fall in love with cycling, maybe you’ll find you enjoy hiking, there might be a coach who will get you excited about boxing, maybe you won’t hate Yoga, or there may be a trainer who sparks your passion for strength training (as a matter of fact I’m sure I will). Go on Instagram & try a couple of my “Try It Tuesday” videos. Get a group of friends or co-workers together and try a month of group training. Don’t have friends or co-workers, try one of the large group trainings & meet some great people.

Pick something, Try something, Do something. Quit sitting on your excuse.

  1. I agree! Try it all! There is something for everyone!! I mix between strength training and yoga! Those are my jives!!!

  2. I prefer #getoffyourass , but just try it works too

I think there is strength in numbers, and once they get to a class or two and meet some like minded people it makes it not so scary and foreign. Anybody can move.

I say more music and louder while the movement is happening – distracts us from the suck

    I like the new name

    1. I like the #getoffyourass too but I thought I’d ease people into my personality. Been thinking I need a new stereo with great speakers.

  3. True that! Having a good group is a key element for motivation that keeps you showing up even when your motivation fails.

  4. I tried it and I love it…a couple years in! I’m not someone you would call ‘athletic’ but I am always willing to try. Sometimes I shock myself, and sometimes I laugh. But I try. And guess what? I try it super early in the morning…and it’s the best! I’m so glad I met my Hanna. 😊

  5. Great post! I can have more excuses than Richard Simmons has little red shorts, but at the end of the day once you find that thing (running, lifting, yoga) and the people you get to do it with not only will you physically reap the benefits but emotionally you will feel better too. By finding your thing you will find joy in life and some best friends too.
